Frequently asked questions

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for any and all musculoskeletal injuries. Osteopaths utilise a combination of manual techniques, exercise prescription and other clinical adjuncts, such as acupuncture, ultrasound and taping; to both remove you from injury and maintain good physical well-being. This approach is derived around fundamental knowledge on how the body works from a mechanical, physiological and psychological perspective.

All three of these professions strive to reach the same outcome, removing you from pain and improving your physical functioning, however; how they get there is often quite different. Due to the principal beliefs of each profession what you will notice is that the type of techniques, length of treatment and session frequency will change. Osteopaths work with a very broad brush in terms of treatment which is entirely personalised to your presentation and endeavour to have you up and out of regular treatment as soon as possible.

In short the answer is it depends on many different factors such as how long you’ve had the pain, whether it is degenerative in nature, how well your body responds to treatment and how the pain started in the first place. Whilst some people may get better after one session, it may take others longer and we won’t know that until we start treating. At ARP our focus is getting you pain-free and at optimal functioning as soon as we can so we will produce an in-depth plan and timeline at the first session to give you an idea right away.

The treatment techniques used themselves aren’t painful when done properly however, as we are working with tight and injured tissues, can often be uncomfortable. It is also not uncommon to feel some increased tension and stiffness for a number of hours after the treatment. This is due to the pro-inflammatory effects of manual therapy and are a necessary part of the healing process.

Becoming an Osteopath entails a 4-year master’s qualification and 1000 hours of clinical supervised practice. Upon completion of the above then potential candidates have to sit a final clinical competency exam before being offered the opportunity to join the register of Osteopaths. Once qualified, Osteopaths are regulated by the General Osteopathic Council and must complete a further 90 hours of continued professional development across several different topic areas.
